Developing strategic management and leadership skills free essay sample
Now the fourth position in the world is the living evidence of its progress and dynamic leadership and management. In 1924, the product teas was used to give it the name and that was TE from tea then the store was in the Stockwell, the name was TES and then CO was added and this became TESCO. The organization on which I am going to write this report is the very well known and globally recognised as the fourth largest food retailer in the world named Tesco PLC. This is the UK based superstore chain and also the largest British retailer. This organization was started by Jack Cohen in 1919 in the East London. The link between is described by different authors and scholars but still this topic is absolutely debatable in the organizational structures. The leader is the one who has the vision which accommodates managers in it but the manager is the one who works under the supervision of the strategic leadership and follow the commandments. The manager works in his or her certain limits but the leader has no specific boundaries which makes the leader prominent and distinguish. So the leaders and managers work together but in different levels but the purpose is the same which is to put their maximum for the growth of the company they work for. 3 DEVELOPING STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS TASK 1. 2: ANALYSE THE IMPACT OF MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP STYLES ON STRATEGIC DECISIONS: Dynamic leadership and management always leave impact on the decisions of the companies everywhere in the world. There are several impressive leadership and management styles that effect the decisions and their implementations. TRANSORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP STYLE: As the name shows that this style is a process of transforming others. Transformational leadership is the valuable influence of the leader in which the leader imparts the knowledge into the employees in such a way that the lives and the abilities of the employees just transform and change according to Mullins (2010). In this style, the leader work with commitment and strong determination and inspires others to put their heart in achieving the goals for the betterment of the organization. So transformation is the essential and significant part of the true and dynamic leadership. Everyone in the world posses some extraordinary abilities and qualities and the only thing to get those things out is to give them chance to perform their potentials and bring those in action. Armstrong and Baron (2003) opine the participative leadership style is the style in which the employees which are the assets of the organization are given the opportunities to get involve and give their ideas and share their knowledge to make the difference for progression in the organizations. As every organization demands hard and collective efforts and then it succeeds. So the participation of the employees in the decisions is very important and necessary. In Tesco PLC, these styles are highly recommended and implemented in all departments in order to make the leadership productive in all dimensions. 4 DEVELOPING STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS TASK 1. 3: EVALUATE HOW LEADERSHIP STYLES CAN BE ADAPTED TO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS: SITUATION FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL STYLE: Organizations have many common problems to which they deal and the solutions are also the same to an extent. Human resource department is responsible to manage and facilitate the employees in order to be more and more productive in all dimensions. There could be different situations where these styles may be implemented by the leadership in this style is to impart the skills and knowledge to other assets of the organization to transform them stated by Phillips and McConnel (2005). Most of the times, if the organization is progressing but the standard of commitment and effectiveness are not there then there can be different decisions which could change the situation. This is only possible when the organization adapts the transformational leadership style in which the employees learn and play their part in the innovative and productive manner. SITUATION FOR PARCIPATIVE STYLE: Martin (2006) states the participative leadership style provides opportunities to be involve and share their opinions and suggestions in order to meet the targets of the organizations. This style can be very impressive as this makes the employees feel proud and encouraged by the leadership. If the organization dramatically goes down and down and the employees do not take interest and eventually they get bored with the system and just do their job but not their passion and commitment then the leadership must get the staff on board and then allow them to participate and involve in the decisions and leadership of the organization to meet the targets together with collective efforts and commitments. This is the situation of the participative leadership style. Ulrich (1999) states the contingency theory is the one which provides alternatives and options to the leadership to manage the organization in a productive and profitable way. The organizations are imposed to face the problems and handle them in a gentle manner and in order to do so they need alternatives and options if there is any sort of uncertainty. Companies cannot be succeeded by just the hard and tough rules but they need to have options and alternatives to manage the employees and productivity. PARTICIPATIVE THEORY: Employees have equal rights to take part in the decisions of the organizations as they are the valuable assets. The leadership cannot ignore the employees and impose their decisions upon them without asking their suggestions and opinions. Tompkins (1995) suggests the involvement and agreement of the employees in the proper leadership decisions of companies is known as the participative leadership style. This style plays an important role in the decisions and gives courage and boldness to employees and this boosts their morale and self respect. sAndrew (2003) describes the situational theory is managing the problems according to the situation and not only by the rules made by the leadership as the general rules and regulations. There are different types of leaders and they play their role under the supervisions of their higher authorities. Some of the leaders are task oriented and some are just the people oriented and this situational leadership is the one that deals with both and gives the decisions 6 DEVELOPING STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLSÃ according to the situations which are not the same all the time in the organizations. In Tesco PLC, all these theories are used and adapted in different times and situations. The contingency theory is applicable and appropriate in the panic situation there the situation gets worst and the leadership wants something that can be the option and alternative to deal with the state of uncertainty. The situational theory is all about the terrible and dangerous scenarios in the companies in which they need the decisions which may affect the situation and resolve the problems related to the particular situation. As the participative theory is the one which provides the chance and opportunity to the employees to share their precious ideas and knowledge in order to have effective and productive decisions. In this way all these management and leadership theories are effective and important in all the dimensions of the companies. Tesco PLC is having all of these and uses them in the situation of the need of the time in different areas and departments. There are different effective and productive strategies which enhance the organizational growth and progress. Treasy (1998) describes that Strategies are the sustainable and suitable policies that improve and promote the organization on the way of success. Companies normally do have these kinds of strategies which attract the other companies and stakeholders to get involve with this organization, if they do then business and profitability increases dramatically. Different useful strategies are launched and implemented by the leadership according to the situations and demands of the customers.
